What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 people were killed and over 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.
Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
