This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
