The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Inclusion in England's Ashes Squad
The English team has chosen a twelve-player squad just two days before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man group, showing there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s condition.
The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse most likely to be omitted if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged several past matches.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers is still the probable choice.
Spin Options Weighed
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
