The United Kingdom, United Nations, and European Union Decry a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Lengthy Jail Sentence.
The sentencing of media publisher and British citizen Jimmy Lai to a lengthy prison term in Hong Kong has drawn widespread criticism. Advocacy bodies and multiple governments have called the security-related charges influenced by political considerations.
International Outcry and Calls for Release
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper declared that the two-decade sentence is effectively a life sentence for the 78-year-old. She labeled the prosecution as politically motivated via a statute designed to silence those who speak out against China. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to cease his persecution and release him to his family.
“This verdict illustrates how the ambiguous and wide-ranging stipulations of Hong Kong’s legal framework are subject to interpretation in violation of universal rights standards,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “deplores” the result of the lengthy trial and called for his swift liberation without preconditions.
Details of the Legal Proceedings
Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered activist publication, was arrested in 2020 the enactment of a sweeping legal statute in Hong Kong. The law was passed by China's government following months of pro-democracy protests endorsed by his publication.
He was found guilty on charges including colluding to publish subversive content and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The collusion allegations were based on the disputed legislation.
A Son’s Anguish
Lai’s son, Sebastien, conveyed that his father fears dying alone apart from his relatives. Lai's defense lawyers labeled him the “globally most notable detainee” currently incarcerated.
Sebastien Lai said that while the outcome was foreseen, its confirmation was more painful than imagined, yet it provided some “relief” that the court process had concluded.
International Ramifications
The verdict has influenced diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this year. Nevertheless, the extent of progress on obtaining his liberty is uncertain.
Sebastien Lai questioned the upside to improved bilateral relations while his father remains imprisoned, saying it felt “rather incongruous.”
Government Reactions
In contrast, the governments in Hong Kong and Beijing applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee said the ruling demonstrated that “the rule of law is upheld.”
A spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, called Lai the “chief architect” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and stated the trial had been “justified and legal.” He called on foreign countries not to interfere in China’s internal affairs.
A Defining Moment
Media freedom advocates have described Lai as a icon for diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general remarked it was a “dark day for those who cherish a free press.”
With a near 100% rate of guilty verdicts on charges under the security law, Lai’s severe sentence is seen as the most severe yet imposed under the disputed law.
