The retail giant Enforces Buying Restrictions on Pokémon Trading Cards
In a significant move, Walmart has begun enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during a single visit. This new rule officially takes effect starting November 5th, based on a company memo distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
Although not formally announced by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer purchasing an enormous quantity of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video received widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to go through.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The updated guideline states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. However, the language has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, since the limit is based on individual trips, theoretically an eager reseller could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to accumulate large quantities over several hours.
The Reseller Crisis
To most players, such efforts might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. In recent years, speculators have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Certain buyers aim to resell sealed items for a profit, while others search for rare cards that can fetch extraordinary prices. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Upcoming Releases
This policy change aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales already show chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for nearly $1,500, highlighting the persistent interest and likely scalper target.
Hopefully, Walmart's restrictions will curb mass buying and improve availability for true fans and everyday enthusiasts alike.
