The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a crucial Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight place.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.
He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes in pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated the player following his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive full international.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion soon."
His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.
Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Manchester.
