The people of Israel commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
Israelis have come together throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed state memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams met in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the plan.
A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an night meeting of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.
The source stated the morning session concluded without significant progress, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet produce any significant progress," but noted that mediators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Critical Points in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for assistance deliveries
- Future governance of the area
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young a woman - whose family member survived the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No place seems like home now and until every captive return none of us will be secure."
"When we see everybody home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to recover," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to show their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator a participant remarked: "We must do any agreement needed for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of the gathering, mourners gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr areas and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.
"As the evening falls, the dread comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we look at the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had taken in the bodies of six people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the south region of the city reported another two fatalities had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south region, medics reported.
