The son of the nation's former President Robert Mugabe has been presented in a Zimbabwean courtroom charged with drug possession.

Robert Mugabe Jr, 33, was arrested on midweek while driving the wrong way on a single-direction road, as per legal filings. Police officers examined a black sling bag he was carrying and allegedly discovered a couple of packets of cannabis.

Following the incident, police announced in a release that five individuals in a "network associated with him" were likewise detained.

The defendant's lawyer stated they plan to deny the allegations and disputed the assertions made by law enforcement.

The legal representative claimed the substances were found from a car that had additional passengers, and that police had located 0.02g of marijuana—while the official documentation states authorities recovered 2g, with a street value of thirty dollars (twenty-two pounds).

The accused wore joggers and a red cap while on his phone as he was escorted into the judicial building on the following day. He was surrounded by individuals and was not handcuffed.

The judiciary detained Mr Mugabe in custody awaiting a decision on release on the end of the week.

Regarding the alleged syndicate members they detained, police reported they found 25 sachets of marijuana and several stimulant tablets.

Police indicated they will proceed with the inquiry.

This is not Mr Mugabe's first brush with the legal system. In the previous year, the younger offspring of the ex-leader and his widow Grace was detained over claims he vandalized items and assaulted a law enforcement agent at a party in Harare.

He was freed after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement with the accuser, who was a friend of his.

Ex-Leader Mugabe Sr passed away in 2019 at the age of ninety-five, a short time after being compelled to step down following nearly four decades in charge of the southern African nation.

He led the struggle against in the seventies against the colonial regime of what was formerly known as Rhodesia—but he was subsequently alleged of using violence to secure victories and destroying Zimbabwe's financial system.

The former president was succeeded by his one-time ally the current leader.

Relations between the incumbent and the former first family had been fraught after they claimed the sitting leader of deceiving Zimbabwe's long-time leader.

His widow had aspired of replacing her spouse but was marginalized by Mnangagwa's supporters.

However, the younger Mugabe has subsequently made amends with the president, participating in a rally in 2022 where he was publicly welcomed back into the governing political faction.
