The Contents of that Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned within a psychic prison built from the memories of the villain Henry. The search for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

The Discovery in the Tunnel
After locating Max in the world known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies not within the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a vessel into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.
This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the tunnel is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the container almost certainly contained some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the children Brenner would experiment on.
Alternatively, the case could have held strange particles that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he battles the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between him and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the endgame conflict to come.
