The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead for World Cup Despite Objections by Egypt and Iran

Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian football federations raised strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations Alongside City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the tournament group match between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA will permit Pride flags inside the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, our role is to prepare our city to host the matches and oversee the fan activities beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Legal Background Behind the Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position on Flags and Banners

The international federation holds full authority of stadiums on matchdays. Although it prohibits political signage with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This policy was applied at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.

  • The Pride Match concept was devised to showcase Seattle’s proud history of advocating for equality.
  • A design contest is underway to create images to commemorate the event.
  • Planners have pledged to making sure every visitor feel welcome in the city during the 48-team competition.

The region is home to a significant most prominent Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations from every competing country. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that characterizes our part of the country,” the statement added.
