Prisons Cannot Be Resolved Immediately, Government Official States, while Law Enforcement Search For Two Individuals Incorrectly Released
Opposition justice spokesperson the shadow minister has described the circumstances as a "total mess," commenting earlier today.
Speaking during a broadcast interview, he pointed to comments made by David Lammy following a recent prisoner release, saying that the minister would establish stricter checks.
"It took almost a week for the corrections department reportedly to realize this occurred" and inform the police, the shadow official explains, "who are now a week behind in the manhunt to locate him."
The opposition figure criticises the minister's performance during yesterday's parliamentary questions and alleges him of a "complete dereliction of duty."
Addressing incorrect inmate discharges more generally, the spokesperson underlines that "each accidental release [...] is unacceptable."
He admits there were such releases under the former administration, but claims the figure "has increased dramatically" under Labour.
Advocating more prisons to be built, he adds: "What the British people expect now are adequate safeguards put in place."
"That is a specific administrative failure by the Ministry of Justice supervised by the minister," Jenrick concludes.
