Offspring of Ex- South African President Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Accusations as Trial Starts
The daughter of ex- South African President Jacob Zuma has denied all charges to terror accusations at the beginning of her trial in the coastal city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over comments she published on digital networks several years back during violent protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her father.
A week of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including looting and arson, left at least three hundred deceased and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2bn).
She has been accused of inciting this unrest and confronts accusations of provocation to commit terror acts and public disorder.
Context of the Proceedings
The protests were concentrated in the areas of the Gauteng province and KZN and followed the previous president's arrest for disobeying a court order to testify at an inquiry into claims of impropriety while he was holding office.
She has consistently denied the charges against her, with her attorney previously describing the government's case as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently stated the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political scores with her parent after he started his own political party and campaigned against the ruling party.
Support and Case Arguments
This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the proceedings was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and family-related persecution" against the previous head of state and his family.
A small number of supporters from her party, her party, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other group representatives participated in the proceedings inside.
The defense has argued that the proof presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and lacks compelling evidence for a conviction.
Key Points of the Legal Proceedings
- Online posts from 2019 form the foundation of the prosecution's argument
- Deadly demonstrations in July 2021 resulted in significant casualties and financial destruction
- The defendant is charged with multiple counts of provocation to public disorder
- Legal trials are anticipated to proceed for multiple weeks
The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their evidence before the judicial authority in what is expected to be a carefully observed judicial process with substantial policy ramifications for South Africa.
