The direst possible consequences of the climate emergency for the UK have been mapped by experts, encompassing a scorching 4C jump in temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea levels. An alternative projection envisions a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and energy needs.
Credible Extremes, Not Guarantees
These effects, certain ones are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are considered as improbable but credible. The team explained that these models filled a gap in planning that had left the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The climate extremes we have mapped aren’t predictions, but they are credible," stated Nigel Arnell who directed the study. "The nation has been formulating policy without the frameworks to assess worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied planners what they need to prepare for environmental results they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."
A Range of Extreme Weather Scenarios
A further series of severe models details the potential extent of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that thermometer readings could soar in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while rainfall could be triple normal levels.
The probability of the worst-case outcomes occurring could not be calculated due to unknown factors about what steps will be taken to tackle global warming and how the planet's climate will react. This approach was compared to national security risk assessments or resilience checks for financial systems.
Major Possibility Elements
- Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if emissions cuts breaks down or if vicious cycles such as the Amazon rainforest perishing emit its huge repository of carbon. This would lead to severe and lengthy heat domes and droughts hitting the UK in summer.
- Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is losing strength and showing signs of collapse due to global heating. A full shutdown starting around 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Crop production would be severely challenged and water resources would be drastically changed," said Arnell.
- Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if glaciers in the polar regions collapse rapidly, inundating low-lying areas. In contrast to the other scenarios, this possibility is already known by coastal engineers.
- Pollution Paradox: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is drastically reduced. This paradoxical outcome occurs because aerosol particles from burning coal block solar radiation from warming the ground.
Planning for the Worst
These dire projections could be used to inform the construction of major projects, including housing developments, nuclear power stations and water management networks. Understanding these future hazards could also accelerate the drive to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The research developed the worst-case scenarios using a combination of past data and records, digital projections and climate physics. The possibilities exclude broader worldwide issues such as the agricultural collapse and increased conflict.
The research was initiated as part of a government’s climate resilience programme. Independent analyses have stated that not enough attention was being given to catastrophic yet improbable risks.
An independent advisory body has recommended that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and evaluate the threats for severe warming. Past policy documents have been labeled being "very weak" by environmental groups.
An official statement commented: "The climate emergency is at the heart of our national priorities, both building resilience and establishing itself as a low-carbon economy. It is vital that the UK is prepared for the effects."
