Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
