I believed I nicked it - Carey on overturned decision.

Australia gloveman Alex Carey stated he thought he had feathered the ball when he was given not out on Decision Review System on day one of the third Ashes Test against England.

Following his reprieve on 72, Carey proceeded to score a superb 106 to aid the Australians finish on 326-8 at the close in Adelaide.

The Key Moment

The home side were 245-6 when Carey attempted a cut shot to seamer Josh Tongue.

The England team were convinced they had a wicket, certain they had detected an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

After skipper Ben Stokes opted to review the on-field call, the replay examined by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a spike however this came prior to the ball had made contact with the bat.

Gaffaney further stated he was of the opinion there was a gap between bat and ball.

Consequently, Carey was reprieved.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," stated Carey.

"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. It made a convincing sound near the bat."

Controversial 'Snicko'

Discussion has swirled about 'the sound wave technology' during the Ashes contest after a number of dubious incidents.

Bowling coach David Saker hinted England may take this most recent incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. It is what it is."

Emotional Century

Carey's century was his maiden in Ashes cricket.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father passed away in September. Carey's wife was crying in the crowd as the batsman celebrated by glancing upward.

"A hundred on home soil with loved ones present is unforgettable," said Carey.

"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm fighting back the tears. But, no, it was great."

Not New to Furore

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the wicketkeeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, resulting in a febrile final day.

Speaking about his survival he added: "The sound wave didn't match up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."

"Perhaps luck was on my side."
