Far-Right Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's Next Leader.
After a definitive runoff election, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Platform Centered On Security and Immigration
Noted for his strong socially conservative views and admiration for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely focused on promises to combat growing crime and drastically curb migration.
He repeatedly cited immigrants, notably the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the race, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face expulsion.
His plans included controversial measures such as constructing detention centers, border walls, electric fences, and bolstering the military presence on the northern border.

Numerous commentators view Kast's success as aligning with a larger rightward shift in South America, coming after recent electoral results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts further describe it as a extension of the established swing of power between left-wing and right leadership since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Solid Majority
In spite of his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast does not hold an overall majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if various right-leaning parties are counted together.
