Eurovision Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new term surfaced several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is unique to Gaza, per insights from doctors including paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for physicians to care for a child who has lost their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Reported Truce

Gaza remains hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. Authorities rejects these accusations, just as it denies all charges it is accused of. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what international harmony manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision turns 70 next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that once promoted harmony has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
