Arne Slot Insists He Is Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it's understandable for doubts to be raised about his position following another convincing loss against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their 9th loss in twelve games, marking the team's poorest streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Eredivisie champions on a difficult evening at Anfield.
“I feel secure, things are alright, I have got a lot of backing from the top,” the coach remarked.
“It's important to reverse this trend and get a victory obviously but when you're coaching a team and underperforming then it is normal that people question you.”
He noted, “I am OK with my role. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a tough spot but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Conversations with The Board
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his dialogues with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach said:
“There's regular dialogue. They are helpful for the squad and for me and those talks happen but they don’t call me every single minute each day to say they have faith in me.”
He further stated, “During our regular discussions I feel the confidence. However I haven’t spoken to them since this game yet so it remains to be seen.”
Familiar Issues and Player Reaction
Slot lamented known shortcomings from his team in their Champions League defeat, namely wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was blunter in his evaluation of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I don’t. I'm telling that to everyone,” Jones remarked.
“It is unacceptable. I don't need to wait to reflect. I’m past feeling anger inside. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He added, “It's difficult because I play for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I've watched Liverpool since I was young.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team enduring a period such as this with results like these.”
Jones stated, “However we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And as long as it is removed, we’re always going to fight.”
“We will attempt to get this team return to where it needs to be, prove again what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the best team in the world.”
“However currently, we’re in the shit and we have to turn it around.”
